Jamaica Jacks Up Airlift
November 05, 2009
By William Ng

Jamaica is beefing up its airlift with new service from JetBlue, AirTran, and US Airways, in addition to the ramp-up of annual seasonal charters from Apple Vacations.

The Caribbean island’s accessibility from the western U.S. is being infused with US Airways’ new nonstop service from its Phoenix hub to Montego Bay. Starting on Dec. 18, there will be one flight from Phoenix each day on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. There will be one flight originating from Montego Bay each day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The Phoenix gateway links Jamaica with 28 western U.S. cities in the carrier’s route system.

Last week, JetBlue Airways launched service from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Kingston, the carrier’s second once-daily nonstop route to the island destination. Its first, a route between JFK and Montego Bay, was introduced in May. JetBlue will add nonstop service to Montego Bay from Boston and Orlando on Jan. 9 and Feb. 8, 2010, respectively. There will be one roundtrip to and fro Orlando on each day of the week. Boston service will be a roundtrip on Saturdays.

AirTran Airways is slated to start nonstop service to Montego Bay from Atlanta, Baltimore, and Orlando on Feb. 11. Atlanta and Baltimore will get a daily roundtrip, while Orlando will get one roundtrip on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Apple Vacations will operate winter seasonal charters from Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, and Milwaukee. Funjet will run charters from St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Milwaukee.
