Convention Industry Council Taps Meeting Professionals Int'l to Globally Expand Certified Meeting Professional Program September 24, 2009
Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the Convention Industry Council (CIC) plan to upgrade the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation in the meetings industry by taking it global. MPI will aid the CMP program to ensure its ongoing relevance amid increasing performance expectations on meeting and event professionals.
“Enhancing the relevance and global availability of the CMP program is a critical next step in the ongoing development of the meetings and events industry,” says Bruce MacMillan, president and CEO of MPI. “MPI believes it is imperative to invest in the future of [meetings] professionals and the contribution they make to global business." The CMP will be "a major element" in MPI's Knowledge Plan, a career development system designed for members of the trade organization.
MPI says the current economic environment is putting emphasis on expectations of meetings and event professionals producing return on objectives and investments. MPI is aboard CIC’s efforts to enhance the existing CMP curriculum to reflect the heightened expectations.
"MPI's investment will help CIC roll out the CMP to the international marketplace," says Eric Allen, chair of the CIC board. "This is a significant milestone for the CMP designation. Our CMP board is working hard to streamline the application process and welcomes the support from MPI."
CMP is the most widely recognized certification in the meetings industry. With the industry’s globalization, demand for the CMP standard in markets such as Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Asia-Pacific continues to escalate, according to MPI, and the group will help CIC expand the designation.
