In his new book The Inspirational Leader, author John Adair argues that leaders are not born but made. The book, which is written in the form of dialogue between a young executive chef and Adair, looks into the character and performance of leadership.
The Inspirational Leader covers many aspects of leadership, including essential leadership characteristics (enthusiasm, integrity, courage and judgment among others), the importance of being fair, giving and receiving, and the ability of a leader to motivate his or her followers.
Adair bases his judgment of useful qualities found in leaders using a model of three concentric circles. The innermost one reads "must," or the qualities that are essential to leadership. The next circle is "should," or attributes that are highly desirable in a leader, and the third is "could," or characteristics that enhance a leader but are not necessary. These characteristics are different according to different leadership roles, according to Adair.
The Inspirational Leader utilizes charts, graphics and lists to make clear the points drawn from the conversation between the chef and the author. These outline key components of inspirational leaders and detail steps to reach goals.
Adair has written 30 books on leadership and leadership and development. He also became the world's first Professor in Leadership Studies and the University of Surrey and helped found Europe's first Centre for Leadership Studies at the University of Exeter.
