Sony Unveils 3 New VAIO PCs
October 28, 2009
By Donna M. Airoldi

Sony Electronics is rolling out three new VAIO notebooks—all preinstalled with the new Microsoft Windows 7.0 operating system—giving users lighter machines, touch-screen capabilities, and built-in Blu-ray technology for high-definition, multimedia viewing on their portable PC screens.

The products will be available beginning in early November online at Sony Premium and Incentive Sales. Here’s a look at the new products.

VAIO CW Series

Create and watch movies and slideshows in high definition with the most affordable of the new VAIO machines, the CW Series notebook.

The computer features Sony's VAIO Movie Story software, improved video-game viewing with a NVIDIA GeForce dedicated graphics card, a 14-inch (diagonal) widescreen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio within a 5.3-pound body, 2.8 GHz, four hours of battery life with a standard battery (six with a large capacity battery), 8 GB of memory, 500 GB of storage, HDMI output (allowing users to playback HD content on compatible big screen HDTVs, and an optional Blu-ray Disc drive.

The CW Series is available in five glossy colors: red, pink, white, black and blue. Prices start at $780.

VAIO X Series

Touted as the world’s lightest notebook, Sony’s new VAIO X Series machine weighs in at just 1.6 pounds (with standard battery) and carries a 16:9 aspect ratio and compact 11.1-inch (diagonal) scratch-resistant LCD screen with LED backlight technology in a frame that is slightly more than one half-inch thick.

This machine is for the more hard-core portable tech users in the household.

The X Series also integrates wireless 3G Mobile Broadband technology provided by Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband Built-In, Wi-Fi (802.11n), Bluetooth wireless technologies, and GPS functionality—a separate Verizon service subscription is required to use the 3G Mobile Broadband technology—and features a newly configured keyboard designed with spacing between the keys to allow a more comfortable typing experience.

A solid-state drive (SSD) is used in place of the spinning hard disk drive found in most computers, allowing for rapid boot-up and quicker access to applications while reducing the risk of hard drive damage—a plus for users who travel regularly with their machines.

Standard battery life is 3.5 hours, with up to 14 available by using the super-extended capacity battery. The unit’s touchpad lets users zoom in and out, flip through pictures, rotate items clockwise and counterclockwise, and scroll vertically and horizontally without ever touching a mouse.

The VAIO X Series notebook comes in two colors, black and gold; prices start at $1,300.

VAIO L Touch Series

Computers just moved one step closer to replacing TVs with the Sony’s new touch-enabled, multimedia machine, the VAIO L Touch HD PC/TV.

Equipped with a 24-inch (diagonal) widescreen panel, the unit displays high-definition content in full HD resolution. Select models feature a rewritable Blu-ray Disc drive for recording, storing and playing back personal content, a built-in tuner, and optional Blu-ray Disc optical drive and HDMI input, so users can connect a compatible HD cable box, satellite receiver or PlayStation 3 via a single cable and enjoy HD entertainment without powering on the PC.

The L comes with Sony’s Media Gallery software for creating high-quality home movies and slideshows, a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce series graphics for graphic-intense gaming and movies, built-in Wi-Fi technology, wireless keyboard, mouse and (on select models) remote control. If space is a premium, users can attach a VESA-compatible mount (sold separately).

Prices for the VAIO L Touch HD PC/TV start at $1,300.
