Historic Luxury Meets Exclusive New Spa as The Jefferson in D.C. Reopens
September 23, 2009
By Donna M. Airoldi
Reward your top employees with a stay at one of the most luxurious boutique hotels in the country—the newly reopened Jefferson in Washington, D.C. The historic hotel unveiled a top-to-bottom renovation/restoration on Aug. 31 that took more than two years to complete and includes the addition of an ultra-exclusive spa.
The 1923 Beaux Arts property, located just four blocks from the White House at the corner of 16th and M streets and known for its impeccable service, has 99 rooms and suites, complete with such rich elements as Jeffersonian antiques and artifacts, marble-tiled entryways, velvet couches, silk-upholstered chairs, custom Porthault linens, soaking tubs, fresh flowers, a butler assigned to each guestroom, complimentary overnight shoeshine, and 17-inch televisions hidden inside bathroom mirrors.
The building’s original skylight above the lobby, after being covered for decades, is visible once again, allowing natural light into the hotel’s renowned restaurant, Plume. Executive chef Damon Gordon, who has worked with Alain Ducasse, also provides the catering for meetings and events at the hotel. The property includes three small meeting rooms—the largest of which accommodates up to 100 participants—a boardroom, a private dining room and “several parlor-like spaces.”
The new Spa at The Jefferson, with just three treatment rooms, is available only to hotel guests and select VIPs. It incorporates two of Thomas Jefferson’s great passions—his Charlottesville home and the world’s great wines—in a menu of botanical treatments that employ herbs and botanicals grown in Monticello's gardens and vinotherapies, such as the Antioxidant Wine Therapy facial with Chardonnay grape seed. Product lines include Red Flower from New York, Parisian–based Darphin and Olavie, a wine-based skin-care company.
Many treatments are customized, and spa visits begin in the guest’s room with a refreshment before the guest is personally escorted to the spa and end with a gift—personally selected by the therapist to complement the spa-goer’s choice of treatment—waiting in the guest’s room.
Packages range from the Wine Lover’s Package combining exclusive vinotherapies with a wine tasting to The Afternoon Tea Package, complete with a choice of 60-minute treatments, Monticello Organic Garden Manicure and Pedicure, and The Jefferson’s traditional afternoon tea.
Men can indulge in a pampering shave in the Truefitt & Hill tradition while relaxing in a classic barber chair, or jump-start their morning with an Executive Express package that includes a hot lather shave, hair trim, shoeshine, jacket pressing, espresso/cappuccino and newspaper.
The facility’s 800-square-foot spa suite features a king-sized bed, a separate parlor that can connect to a couple’s treatment room, Italian marble bathroom with a private steam shower with massaging body sprays and a separate deep soaking tub. Guests who combine the suite with the treatment room can book the space for 18, 24 or 48 hours with unlimited spa services included.
Room rates start at $375 per night. Spa treatments range from $90 to $285, depending on length of service. For more information, visit www.jeffersondc.com.
