Construction Firm Uses Reloadable MasterCard for Safety Incentive Program
September 10, 2009
By William Ng
Healy Long & Jevin, a mid-Atlantic region concrete construction company, is using a prepaid MasterCard-based safety incentive program and is finding success.
The company began rolling out its safety incentive program in August 2008, distributing the card to every employee. Each month, if employees work a minimum of 30 hours a week without a recordable injury, they all get $25 electronically deposited onto their SafeRewards Card, by Maverick Network Solutions, at the end of the following month. If there is a recordable injury, no one receives the bonus.
“Before we put this program into place, we rewarded our core group of superintendents, carpenters, cement finishers, and laborers for safe performance with an end of year bonus," says Joe Abbonizio, Healy Long & Jevin's risk management/safety manager. To keep safety top of mind, Abbonizio says it tapped Maverick Network Solutions to create a cost-effective and efficient safety incentive program that runs monthly.
Long & Jevin's SafeRewards Card, which is a reloadable debit MasterCard card, can be used anywhere MasterCard debit cards are accepted.
“Because this incentive program requires everyone to be accountable to each other on the job for safety, and because immediate gratification is built into the system, the attention given to safety has definitely increased," says Sean Healy, the construction firm's treasurer. "Our employees are now coming to us a few days before the end of each month to check out the safety performance for the preceding month and to find out if they have earned the reward.”
