Movie/Pizza Gift Card Bonus for School Recycling Program
October 29, 2009
By Donna M. Airoldi
FundingFactory, one of the leading fundraising programs for schools and nonprofit organizations that use recycling in the United States, is offering a new incentive program that can earn participants bonus rewards in the form of either movie or pizza gift cards or vouchers.
New and continuing FundingFactory participants who register for the “Reel Tasty” Free Movie/Pizza Bonus can earn a $10 Papa John’s e-gift card or voucher good for a free movie at more than 20 participating theater chains for every 50 qualifying items (printer cartridges and old cell phones) sent to FundingFactory during the bonus period of Sept. 14, 2009 to Aug. 31, 2010. These bonuses are in addition to what participating organizations already earn for their qualifying recycled items.
“The more you turn in, the more you can earn,” says Sean Michaels, FundingFactory president and cofounder, adding that the new offer is a combination of two of its most popular past incentive programs. “Each spring we’d offer a pizza-party contest to bring the kids into the process, and the movie voucher program would be done in the summer, with the idea of thanking the coordinator or teacher for their hard work. People used to horde their cartridges until the summer to get in on the movie promotion. So we decided to merge the ideas, run a year-long program, and then let the participants choose what they wanted.”
The hard part is building awareness that this new incentive is available, says Michaels. Still, about 1,000 schools have signed up since the program launched last month.
FundingFactory was launched in 1998 as a way for schools and nonprofits to raise needed funds for programs while helping the environment. The for-profit company acts as a facilitator for schools and nonprofits, encouraging them to collect empty printer cartridges and old mobile phones from parents and local businesses. The company then sells the items in bulk—typically in loads of 10,000 items at a time—to manufacturing companies who can reuse the parts.
The company has seen rapid growth recently as more people are focusing on green issues, says Michaels. “Before, everyone wanted the money. Now they’re doing it more for environmental reasons—not that the funding isn’t still important.”
To date, about 112,000 schools and organizations have registered with FundingFactory, raising more than $20 million. For more information on FundingFactor and the “Reel Tasty” incentive program, visit www.fundingfactory.com/reeltasty.aspx.
