The Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC) has named Eduardo Chaillo, executive director of meetings for the Mexico Tourism Board, as the 2011 recipient of its Profile and Power Award.

The award, which recognizes individuals and organizations that have made "significant contributions" to advancing the awareness and influence of the meetings industry in their respective communities, was bestowed upon Chaillo because of his leadership in conducting a comprehensive economic impact study of Mexico's meetings industry.

"We are increasingly realizing the importance of rigorous measurement of the benefits associated with meetings and conventions in order to be convincing to government decision-makers," says JMIC President Philippe Fournier. "The work and energy invested by Mr. Chaillo demonstrates a level of commitment to the industry and to his country that should be an inspiration to us all."

Chaillo's study, which was conducted by Mexico's Federal Ministry of Tourism, found that the 197,400 meetings held in Mexico in 2010 involved 23 million participants and 24.2 million overnight guest stays. The business represented 18 percent of Mexico's total travel and tourism demand and generated direct spending of $18.1 billion for Mexico's economy.

"Studies such as these demonstrate the broad scope of economic impacts resulting from the meetings industry and go a long way toward broadening perceptions of the value we bring to the overall economy," says Fournier.

JMIC was established in 1978 as a forum for international associations engaged in various aspects of the meetings industry. According to the group, it is now engaged in the process of "building better communications and linkages amongst member organizations" and in advancing the industry's profile "along with a greater appreciation of the value the industry brings to the global economy."

Members of JMIC include many of the major meetings industry trade groups in the United States and abroad, including Destination Marketing Association International, Meeting Professionals International, the International Congress and Convention Association, the Professional Convention Management Association, and Site.
