Aside from its sunny weather and beautiful beaches, Sarasota, Florida, is best known for being the former home base of the Ringling Brothers Circus, whose traveling show made the city its winter headquarters from 1927 until 1959. Today, remnants of the Ringling days remain, including The Ringling, an art and history museum on the former estate of circus baron John Ringling and his wife, Mable.

But The Ringling isn't the only place in Sarasota where the Ringling legacy lives on. In a sense, it also lives on in the city's most distinctive hotels, each of which promises visitors a unique atmosphere, a memorable experience, vibrant energy and dynamic people -- the same things that made the "Greatest Show on Earth" so great.

Case in point: the city's newest hotel, the Sarasota Modern, which has just opened its doors in downtown, operator Marriott International announced this week.

Located in Sarasota's hip Rosemary District, the new property is part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, a Ringling-esque collection whose members Marriott describes as "characterful, independent hotels draw together by their passion for captivating design and their drive to create vibrant social scenes." Featuring a European-inspired design, the property has 89 guest rooms and suites, each of which has a minimalist décor aesthetic and large indoor/outdoor living looms, with some suites featuring private outdoor clawfoot tubs.

Amenities include a fitness center with Peloton equipment, a yoga room overlooking Sarasota Bay, a pool deck with two pools and a hot tub, a vintage Volkswagen van that provides shuttle service to the beach and downtown, and a signature restaurant with live entertainment.

Finally, for groups there's a 2,000-square-foot meeting room, a 2,500-square-foot private dining room and the 6,000-square-foot pool deck.

"We are thrilled to welcome the Sarasota Modern into the Tribute Portfolio family," said Jennifer Connell, vice president, brand marketing and management, Tribute Portfolio. "Our guests crave the real deal when they are traveling, from the people they meet to the design and ambiance that surround them. With its energetic vibe and dynamic social spaces, the Sarasota Modern will not disappoint as the way to experience the Gulf like a local."
