With casino gambling legalized in Massachusetts and New York, the Northeast's veteran gaming player, Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT, is left on the defensive. Its response to the impending competition: a second hotel.

Announced last week, Mohegan Sun's new Earth Hotel -- a complement to the existing 1,200-room Sky Hotel -- will feature 400 guest rooms, an indoor pool, a fitness center, and an unspecified amount of functional meeting space.

"The Earth Hotel could not come at a better time as we position ourselves for the increased regional competition and ensure that we continue to be the premier entertainment and gaming destination on the East Coast," Mitchell Etess, CEO for the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA), said in a statement. "Many team members here have been working tirelessly on this project for a long time. It's exciting to see their efforts come to fruition."

MTGA will commence construction on the $120 million project later this month, with a target opening date in fall 2016.
