Citing travelers' increased demand for reliable, affordable Internet access, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide will begin offering free Internet access in February to members of its Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) loyalty program, it announced today.

Available to SPG members who book through Starwood's digital channels, including the company's corporate and brand websites, its mobile sites, and its SPG app, the service will commence at participating hotels worldwide on Feb. 2, 2015.

"With the seismic shift towards digital, particularly when guests are on the road and literally mobile, our SPG members believe high-quality Internet access is a basic necessity right up there with a great bed," Chris Holdren, Starwood's senior vice president of SPG and Digital, said in a statement. "Offering free in-room Internet access just relieves one more pain point in the travel experience and recognizes our loyalty to SPG members who travel with us."

Starwood's announcement comes a month after competitor Marriott International announced it would similarly extend free Wi-Fi to Marriott Rewards members. Its service begins in January
