Meliá Hotels International already has dominated much of Europe and Latin America. Now, the Spanish hotelier has its eyes on Asia, where it currently has 48 properties that are either in operation or under development across seven countries -- including Thailand, where it plans to open a new hotel on the resort island of Phuket, it announced last week.

Scheduled to open in 2021, Meliá Phuket Mai Khao will be Meliá's fifth property in Thailand. Located on the northwest coast of Phuket along Mai Khao Beach -- known for its tropical reef clusters just offshore -- it will have 101 private villas, each of which will have its own private pool. Elsewhere, it will boast lush courtyards, two pools, a spa, several food-and-beverage outlets, and an unspecified amount of meeting space.

"It's absolutely thrilling news that we are expanding our footprint into Phuket with Meliá Hotels & Resorts brand," said Bernardo Cabot Estarellas, senior vice president, Asia Pacific, Meliá Hotels International. "While tourism continues to be the driving force in the Phuket economy, we're well-poised to bring our extensive experience in the resort segment to one of the most desired destinations in Asia."

Added Maetapong Upatising, managing director of Phuket Villa Group, the property's owner, "We're excited to embark on this partnership with Meliá Hotels International, the world's largest resort hotel company, to capture the flourishing tourism market in Phuket. Looking ahead, together with Meliá Hotels International, we have every confidence in bringing the best of hospitality to Phuket and setting the benchmark for hospitality on this beautiful island."
