A "grand" destination deserves a "grand" hotel. And that's exactly what Grand Cayman will soon get, according to Hyatt Hotels Corp., which yesterday announced plans to open a new Grand Hyatt hotel on the largest of the Cayman Islands.

Scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2020, Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman Hotel & Residences will occupy 7.1 acres on Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach, less than a mile from George Town's city center and just 10 minutes from the airport.

It will have 351 guest rooms, a seafront "eco-walk" celebrating the area's diverse ecology, six food-and-beverage outlets, a 9,000-square-foot spa and fitness center, three swimming pools, retail shops, a kids club, and a state-of-the-art screening room -- not to mention 25,000 square feet of indoor meeting and event space, which will make the property the largest function space in the Cayman Islands.

"We are delighted that the Grand Hyatt brand is expanding in the Caribbean, and especially in Grand Cayman where the hospitality and tourism sector is primarily aimed at the luxury market," said David Tarr, senior vice president of development for Hyatt.

Although Hyatt previously had a presence in the Cayman Islands, it exited the market in 2007 when its management agreement expired for the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman. That hotel was damaged in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan and never reopened.

"The opening of this hotel will be a great addition to this popular destination, and marks the welcome return of the Hyatt brand to the Cayman Islands," Tarr continued. "Guests will experience welcoming luxury and best-in-class restaurants at Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman Hotel & Residences, while also creating memorable experiences in this breathtaking destination."
