Celebrity Cruises has revealed details of its new "Edge" class of ships, the first new design for the brand in 11 years. The first ship in the class, Celebrity Edge, will debut in December 2018, and its sister, Celebrity Beyond, is to be launched in 2020; they will each accommodate 2,918 passengers.
One of the top features is the Magic Carpet, pictured left, a platform off the side of the ship that moves between decks. The platform will have multiple uses, from a specialty restaurant that seats 90, to an extension of the pool deck and as a loading dock. Other unique feature of Edge ships are the 918 balcony cabins with "infinite verandas," whose design turns cabins into a seamless space -- from the room's door all the way to the edge of the balcony.
"Celebrity Edge is one of the most exciting, innovative and transformational ships I have ever been involved with," said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "The new features and refined design will establish a new baseline for ships from here on out."
"Our guests don't want to just skim the world like a magazine -- they want to feel a human connection with it," said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises. "Every element of Celebrity Edge is meant to make that connection intense and unforgettable. Our new class of ship will allow guests to experience their journeys with the uniqueness and sophistication that marks the rest of their lives."
