Q: What are some tips or guidelines that I should use to make my employee recognition the most effective it can be?
A: Although praising and recognizing employees may seem like a common-sense activity, a large number of managers have never learned to do it well. Here are a few tips to make your recognition more effective:

1. To be the most effective, recognize an employee as soon as possible after the achievement or desired activity has occurred.

2. Make sure your delivery of the recognition is sincere … if your delivery is just an act, the recognition will be lost.

3. Provide details of the achievement(s) you are recognizing.

4. Deliver the recognition face-to-face whenever possible.

5. Do not use words like “but” to qualify the recognition.

6. Look for opportunities to recognize progress toward the desired goals.
