How do you effectively motivate Millennials? The question has challenged managers for years, even decades. And now, members of this generation, born as early as 1977 depending on your definition, have become managers themselves. Millennials' high expectations of their workplace and its leadership, as well as their eagerness to hop from job to job, has not mellowed with time-instead, it's become the new standard for all generations in the workplace making it more important than ever to know how to get strong performances from these workers.

To better understand how motivating Millennials has evolved, we spoke with a pair of experts who know this generation well: Bruce Tulgan, founder and CEO of RainmakerThinking, Inc., a management research and training firm, as well as the author of several books including The 27 Challenges Managers Face and Not Everyone Gets a Trophy: How to Manage Millennials; and Cord Himelstein, vice president of marketing and communications for HALO Recognition, who has worked to understand the specific awards and types of programs that appeal to these workers. These thought leaders helped get us inside the minds of this group, and to appreciate the lessons this tells us about managing other generations in the workplace, whether Boomers, Gen X or the incoming Generation Z. Communication, customization, and the right rewards all play a role. Listen on to find out how.
