Last year's IMEX America trade show achieved a 31 percent reduction in overall waste, a 56 percent reduction in food waste, and a 150 percent increase in locally sourced foods. This year's show will be even "greener," according to organizer the IMEX Group, which last week announced a number of new sustainability initiatives for IMEX America 2015, taking place Oct. 13-15 in Las Vegas.

Among the green efforts planned at IMEX America this year are: education sessions on topics such as green meetings and corporate social responsibility (CSR); the introduction of a new recycling program at The Shade Tree, a shelter for homeless and abused women and children that is IMEX America's official charity; introduction of a new "badge back" badge recycling program; and launching of a new "Green Team" program whereby buyers and exhibitors will be asked to complete tasks that reduce waste and increase awareness of CSR in exchange for a green ribbon that they can wear during the show to indicate their Green Team membership.

"IMEX America is committed to encouraging the meetings and incentive travel industry to address sustainability issues and to tackle these issues in a proactive, practical way," IMEX Group CEO Carina Bauer said in a statement. "The intention is to raise the green bar across the board and strengthen our sustainability efforts."
