Weather
The secret to Aspen's allure is the weather. Although the average winter temperature does dip below 30 F/-1 C, the sun shines nearly every day to reveal blue skies and clean mountain air. The average snowfall in Aspen is 300 in/765 cm. The average temperature in January is 21 F/ 6 C.
In summer the high altitude delivers pleasant warmth sans broiling heat. Afternoon rains do fall but rarely last longer than an hour. By July it's 70-80 F/21-27 C, but temperatures can fall to 45 F/7 C above timberline—the point on a mountain at which the trees don't grow. Roads at high elevations, such as Independence Pass, are often not clear of snow until July.
Spring can see cold winds and avalanche danger, but with its sunny days, it's the locals' favorite time to hit the slopes.
Aspen really is a year-round resort. While the winter draw is ski and snow, summer offers hiking, biking, fishing and more. In early fall, Aspen turns golden as the air crackles crisp and the trees for which this city is named give a glorious show of autumn beauty.
