Globoforce Lays Out 'ABCs of Engagement'

Workplace engagement firm Globoforce has released a new e-book that details how organizations can ensure strong employee engagement and common mistakes in implementing incentive programs. The e-book offers a set of four articles and is available for download here
The e-book begins by giving an historical perspective with the article “5 Famously Disengaged Employees and the Lessons They Can Teach Us.” These range from famous villains like Benedict Arnold, pointing out that he became a traitor to the Continental Congress in the 18th century when he was unjustly demoted, to beloved figures like Walt Disney, who was fired from the Kansas City Star by an editor who wrote that he lacked imagination.
Marcus Brutus, Martin Luther, and Nikola Tesla round out the famous disaffected, with the piece concluding that, “The good news is that many disengaged employees are really just potentially engaged employees whose passion for their work has been stifled and curdled.”
Another piece in the digital book is “Nine Foolproof Ways to Guarantee Employee Engagement.” Among the strategies are to praise employees in public while correcting them in private, and recognizing a worker’s progress along the way to reaching a larger goal. Recognize often, make it clear what you expect, trust your employees, and make room for employees to grow are also among the ways to keep workers engaged in an organization.
The third article offers quick pointers on “How to Encourage Passionate Employees.” This spotlights three types of factors — job factors, organizational factors, and relationship factors — that can help keep workers connected to their workplace. For example, the job factors include Autonomy, Meaningful Work, Feedback, Workload Balance, and Task Variety.
“In reviewing this list, it’s immediately clear that having a true culture of recognition can play a significant role in enhancing the majority of these factors — and at least two factors in each major bucket,” writes the author.
The final and longest article looks at “How to Build a Habit of Engagement,” summarized by the three-step cycle of Cue, Routine, and Reward, drawn from the bestselling book The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.
“By subtly adjusting cues and routines, and linking them with satisfying rewards, Duhigg argues, we can break ourselves of destructive habits and improve our lives exponentially,” reads the piece.
