Macy's new partnership with Earthworks System will make it the first department store chain to offer a recyclable gift card program.
Last week, department store giant Macy's announced a partnership with Earthworks System LLC, the Solon, OH-based company that supplies 100-percent recycled PVC to the plastic card industry and plastic card recycling programs. Earthworks will now provide a recyclable gift card program for Macy's customers, making Macy's the first major department store chain to offer a recyclable gift card program.
"The Earthworks System for plastic card recycling complements Macy's sustainable business philosophy," says Rodd Gilbert, president of Earthworks System. "Our partnership will provide Macy's and its customers an environmental solution for the significant number of plastic cards it distributes every year."
An Earthworks System Recyclable identifier will be imprinted on Macy's gift cards to indicate they're made of Earthworks System-approved recyclable materials. Macy's stores will collect spent gift cards for their return to Earthworks System, where the cards will be reprocessed into printable sheets using Earthworks System's patent-pending PVC recycling process.
