Tivoli Audio Unveils Noise Cancelling Headphones
June 25, 2012
Tivoli Audio has introduced a new line of active noise cancelling headphones featuring fine wood ear cups housing the speakers.
The Radio Silenz headphones’ solid wood housings -- finely finished in cherry, walnut, and black ash, matching many of Tivoli’s radios —- are not just made of fine material for its good looks. After all, there’s a reason most high-end floor speakers come in wood cases: hard wood provides excellent sound quality and low resonance. This advantage is also combined with high-performance 40 millimneter drivers powering the headphones’ sound.
“We created Radio Silenz to maximize musical listening experiences by combining the acoustic advantages of natural woods with the technology of active noise cancelation,” says Tom DeVesto, Tivoli Audio’s founder, CEO, and designer. “I wanted them to be comfortable, sound good, and not be expensive.”
The company says the active noise cancelling system reduces up to 85 percent of ambient noise. The cushions sit on the ear, not surrounding it like larger noise-cancelling headphones. As with virtually all of its products, Tivoli Audio can customize the Radio Silenz headphone, including adding logos.
The headphones also feature a “defeat” button which, when pressed, stops the music or other programming being played and channels the feed from the external microphones -– normally used in the noise cancelling system -- to the surrounding area so users can converse with a flight attendant or someone else nearby without removing the headphones or turning off the noise cancelling system. The button is on a small control unit on the wire, which also has a volume control and shirt clip.
DeVesto adds that the company is not planning to develop in-ear headphones or any other styles of its new Radio Silenz line, just this model.
The headphones' ear cups fold flat and up into the curved headband for ease of packing. A gold-plated 3.5 millimeter right angle stereo plug, airline adapter, and travel pouch are included.

Devesto says the headphones are good for up to 50 hours on a single AAA battery. They will be available this summer
