BandO BeoPlay A9
High-end Danish audio maker Bang & Olufsen has released the BeoPlay A9, a powerful new wireless speaker with an unusual form factor.

The BeoPlay A9 is circular and, like most B&O products, very thin. What makes it particularly interesting are the three slender wood legs that support it. The effect is like having a slender flying saucer mounted on a tripod rather than a traditional-looking speaker. That helped it win a Best of Innovations Award at CES this year.

It uses two three-quarter-inch tweeters and two 3-inch midrange units driven by separate 80-watt amplifiers to deliver the high and middle tones. An eight-inch bass unit, powered by a 160 watt amplifier provides the oomph through a bass built into the rear of the unit.

It will connect wirelessly to an iPhone, iPad, or Android device via AirPlay or DLNA. With a total of 480 watts, it can fill even very large rooms with clear, rich sound. Like all B&O systems, the BeoPlay A9 has no buttons or dials but is controlled by the wave of a hand across its top to adjust the volume or a touch to mute the sound. It has three pre-set sound modes for wall, corner, or freestanding positions to optimize acoustic performance depending on where it is located in a room.

A connection panel beneath the unit has the power and line-in sockets, as well as a USB socket that will dock and charge the user's smartphone or tablet. Solid wood legs are available in oak, beech, or teak. Fabric covers are available in silver, white, black, red, green, and brown. The BeoPlay A9 is priced at $2,699.
