GiftCardLab.com has acquired fellow gift card supplier 1-800-GiftCard.com, expanding the company's offerings to corporate and incentive groups, the company announced on Sept. 25. The Dallas-based Gift CardLab, which currently operates the corporate program Incentive CardLab, now possesses 1-800-GiftCard.com’s client portfolio, trademark, and its vanity URL giftcard.com.
“I believe the trademark and vanity phone number will help our corporate incentive business by providing a more memorable way to contact us in order to purchase cards. We don't typically have consumers ordering via the phone,” said Dave Jones, CEO of Gift CardLab, speaking to Incentive.
In a press statement, Jones said, “I have a great deal of respect and admiration for the 1-800-GiftCard.com team. They have built a wonderful business based upon superior customer service and had amazing vision to register and trademark key assets in the gift card industry. We plan to continue in this tradition, now as a team.”
All of 1-800-Giftcard.com’s business comes from corporate and incentive groups, which will provide Gift CardLab with additional gift card customization options, allowing it to tap into the Austin, TX–based company’s extensive open- and closed-loop as well as e-Gift card options.
1-800-GiftCard.com’s current Incentive Reward Program allows corporate buyers to create customized “locked” e-certificates that bear no value until the recipient completes a specific task or action. When the individual reaches his or her sales, safety, or performance goal, the certificate can then be unlocked and redeemed.
The program includes e-mailable card numbers, as well as a Gift Giving Is Easy Rewards Manager application software that can be used to manage online rewards. Though called 1-800-GiftCard.com, the incentive gifts are also available as custom e-certificates or greeting cards, as well as standard plastic gift cards.
“I believe Dave Jones is a visionary with a proven track record and that memorable 1-800-GiftCard will provide a unique marketing advantage to help him achieve his rapid expansion plans in the gift card industry,” said Maynard Small, president and founder of 1-800-GiftCard.com, in a statement.
Started in 2004, Gift CardLab was the first company to offer customized Visa gift cards and to ship their gift cards with a customized greeting card included. They have also moved quickly to expand the local merchant cards available, branded with each brand’s own logo and images.
“With sales now approaching $100 million, we believe this acquisition is the first step in reaching $1 billion in annual gift card sales by 2014,” said Jones, in the statement. “We want to make it as easy, safe, and convenient as possible for customers to purchase gift cards whether you are buying one gift card as a birthday gift or 10,000 gift cards for employee incentives.”
